BNO News: Powerful earthquake off southern New Zealand coast

Your coverage was very good. This is the reason why you should keep on doing it. The major news organizations only takes up the story when there is a body count. In the NZ earthquake there was none. So there.

Keep up the great work - I found your NZ earthquake coverage really useful - well done.

Correct me if I am wrong, but nothing actually happened as a result of the earthquake or tsunami warning, right? No deaths, no injuries, no damage. Do I understand that correctly?

I too thought your Tsunami coverage was great, particularly because I am an Australian living in the UK. I phoned home to Tasmania to speak to family to find out what was happening at ground level and to see how the local media were reporting it. I was actually the first to break the news to them as their local media hadn't even covered it.

Whilst nothing major happened of the Tsunami, it was still very good coverage. This is not the first time I have seen news break on twitter well and truly before the major news organisations take them up.

Keep up the good work BNO!

You guys are awesome. Others that attack you are probably jealous of your speed. I know my friends on Facebook when I post news from you that I get from Twitter...they do not take it seriously. They say they will not believe a story until it is on CNN or other major media sources. Just like when TMZ reported MJ's death and hour before it was mentioned by the mainstream media. There is a big change coming in the way news is reported. Twitter is becoming major and soon people will realize this. Kudos to you.

Interesting analysis. As an Australian who lives 100 m from the Pacific all this information is very important. I didn't know, having just gone to bed when the warning was issued. But I'm not sure if there was a real event in the middle of the night whether a majority of people would find out - there may be public address systems in Sydney but not in regional centres.

Twitter has an important role to play in this and News Services must use it as a medium - well done!

We have a tsunami plan - but need to know it is coming!

If not even the local media were covering the 'story' it suggests it's not an important story. The local media are probably more cautious about 'crying wolf' too often. It seems you've just signed up to Earthquake and Tsunami warnings and report each one you get.

    Rob:

The problem is probably that it took place during the late evening hours in Australia. Most media don't report at all, or only little, overnight. And tsunami warnings are very serious - they are rarely issued. When they are issued, it means there is a realistic threat of a destructive tsunami. If you can read also in the post above, some coastal areas were evacuated because of the warning.

I recently joined Twitter and have been following BNO news for 2 or 3 weeks. In that time, you have provided some major news events before CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, Reuters, UPI, and APmobile used Twitter. I cannot speak to ABC or FOX News as I have just added them to my Twitter account. I was quite surprised that there was little if any coverage of the NZ earthquake. Granted there were no deaths or casualites but the fact remains that this was something that should have been reported. I note that one commentor stresses the point that there were no deaths or injuries or damage. This is correct and probably the reason the major news outlet gave it such little coverage. It doesn't alter the fact that the events as reported by BNO did occur. Let the receiver determine the importance of receiving that report. Please keep up the excellent job you have been doing.

Although I love your service, I dont think this particular story warrented anything beyond a 'devloping story' for alomost everyone on earth except people living on the australian coast directly affected by the warning. No one was hurt. no damage was done, so way take away time from an actual news event in which dozens were killed?
In fact, if I may be so bold in offering some advice, i'd stay away more from the earthquake alarms. You post them, and nothing more happens, than it's no news, a non-starter. Being first isn't enough, you need to weigh the effects as well. Otherwise I would be on the USGS-rss instead...

The coverage was great. I was sick this particular night but I can tell you that there's nothing wrong with reporting on an active tsunami warning that, given the magnitude of the earthquake causing it, was potentially devastating.
I regret that not only this was so neglected by mainstream media but, as you know, the shootings at TSU as well. It's not okay for them NOT to report on them -- at least in any near time-range after the actual event HAPPENS. It IS a great thing to report on what needs to be reported. People care about these things. Regardless of whether the actual event is being cared about by other media outlets. Everyone I know that I've spoken to about the TSU response was baffled when they actually saw it in the news. People thought the URL I gave to the article was a joke since NO ONE else was covering it..
